Every once in a while I will meet with prospective home sellers who ask me to provide a professional price opinion on their home but have no intention of ever listing with me. I provide a price, market data and comparables only to have them tell me their (insert obscure relative here) holds a real estate license and is going to list the house. Let me tell you, people: simply holding a license does not make you a real estate agent. Sure, it gives you the power to sell real estate, but being a real estate agent is more than passing an exam and getting a license.
Being a real estate agent means being conscious of what’s going on in the market, your market. It has to do with tracking what is selling, previewing homes and following trends. Anyone can get licensed if they pass a test. Not everyone invests their time in really knowing the market they are working in.
I guess what I’m trying to say is that, if you’re going to ask my opinion of value, if you want to know what is happening in the Southern Maine Real Estate market, if you respect me enough to call me to come over to your home and provide a service- hire me, not your cousin’s father-in-law. It will be a decision you won’t regret.
